The Salt Lake Blue Al Safar Fouta.
The Safer family have created foutas for generations. They began using the traditional handlooming technique before investing in machinery for their modest factory opposite the family home. The foutas are still to this day finished by hand. Over 30 family members make a living from the business now as they sell their foutas across the country and across the world. The Wee Souk is currently their sole U.K partner.
Safer Family
We met the Safer family in August 2022 during our road trip around the country searching for new artisans and products.
We headed to Monastir, the capital of textiles and visited their small shop in Lamta after they replied to our open call to artisans. We were so impressed with the quality and beautiful diamond or 'safar' pattern. As well as an invitation to lunch, Ala kindly offered to show us the family factory. Opposite their home on a residential street, we wandered in to a very noisy production room! It was incredible to see how the foutas are made to meet increased demand and watch them being finished by hand.
The family have been producing foutas for generations, in all shapes and sizes. The grandfather of Ala made foutas on a handloom and his father, seeing an opportunity moved the business onto machines. This has meant the business now employs over 30 family members. They sell their foutas across Tunisia and the globe, but for the moment we are the sole stockist in the U.K!
